You’ve packed warm socks, a festive sweater, and checked to make sure there was adequate air in the snow tires.

You’ll also want to add a simple cybersecurity checklist to your packing routine before you venture out for the holidays.

Before You Go

You’ve set a mail hold, called the dogsitter and cleaned the house. Now take a few minutes to prep on your digital devices using these tips:

• Make sure you have backups of your important data saved on devices you are not taking with you.
• Update devices to run the latest software versions and back them up.
• Set up the Find My iPhone (iOS) or Find My Device (Android) feature on your devices.
• Install and use a reputable personal VPN to help protect and anonymize your Wi-Fi connection.

In Transit

Whether by plane, train or automobile, travel securely by remembering these recommendations:

• Limit the number of devices you take and always keep them with you.
• Disable automatic Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity so you don’t connect to unknown devices or services.
• Pass on public Wi-Fi in favor of the personal hotspot feature of your smartphone. If you need to connect to a public Wi-Fi network (such as at an airport, hotel or cafe), ask an employee at the location to verify the name of their Wi-Fi and its password so you can be sure you’re using the right one.
• Watch out for shoulder surfers and eavesdroppers. Wait to have sensitive conversations until you are in a private space.
• Avoid free USB charging ports in airports and don’t sync your phone with a rental vehicle.
• Don’t share your boarding pass on social media! The barcode on the pass contains personal information and can be read by anyone with free software.

While You’re Away

Upon arrival, follow these best practices:

• Location services are great when you need a map but turn them off when not in use.
• Stow devices if you can’t take them with you. Hotel safes aren’t ideal, but it beats leaving them in a car or visible in your hotel room.
• Avoid public computers in hotel lobbies and internet cafes, especially for making online purchases or accessing your accounts.
• Restrict posting on social media so scammers don’t know your location or that you’re not home. Wait to share your trip until you return home.
