The Valley Waste Disposal landfill has served communities in the Lewis Clark Valley since 1986 and was purchased by Jake Kaschmitter when he was only 23 years old.

Kaschmitter shares insight from his journey as a first-time business owner. 

Why did you purchase Valley Waste Disposal?

Why would an entrepreneur purchase a landfill? Well, I heard it was a growing field…

Jokes aside, there are unique benefits from owning Valley Waste Disposal. Our company is positioned as the primary landfill for construction and demolition waste in the Lewis Clark Valley. Because there are high barriers to entry in this market, we fill a profitable niche that provides steady income.

It’s unusual to meet first-time entrepreneurs that operate a large business at a young age. What have you learned from your experience?

I’ve learned how important it is to build professional relationships. After I bought the company, I sought out professionals in various fields that could support the growth of my business. After I explained my vision for the company, I kept in close touch with them to leverage their experience and work together on my business objectives.  

When I first met my crew, I was initially concerned it would be a strange dynamic for them to have a young boss. Thankfully, it wasn’t an issue and they were very helpful during the management transition.

I quickly learned that employees are a company’s most valuable asset. That’s why it’s important for my company to provide benefits such as health insurance, a 401(k) plan and other resources that show I’m invested in my employees’ future. If you take care of your people, they’ll take care of your business.

How is your company making a positive difference to Idaho businesses?

In the last few years, Lewiston has seen a surge in growth as people move into our area.

Many contractors are either building new construction or helping people remodel and Valley Waste Disposal is positioned to support both activities. One of the services we offer is providing 30- and 40-yard roll-off waste disposal containers, which are transported to and from construction sites by our drivers. These containers help contractors improve their building efficiency and help create safer working conditions.  

By supporting the needs of local industry, Valley Waste Disposal recently had the most profitable year in the history of the company.

What tips do you have for other small businesses seeking to grow?

It’s important for small businesses to recognize and meet the needs of their local markets. Idaho’s rapid growth is creating many opportunities for entrepreneurs.

It’s also important to build a team of people who share your goals and are aligned with the vision for your company.  

Finally, finding mentors and leveraging their experience can make a big difference in the formative stages of your business.
