Small Business Success Story: Wood River Inn

Sun Valley is one of the most popular resort destinations in Idaho, and this summer saw a resurgence in tourism, offering The Wood River Inn & Suites the opportunity to capitalize on a new wave of visitors.

Since its founding in 1998, the Wood River Inn & Suites has developed a strong market position because of its excellent customer service and unique offerings. The company’s  awards include being ranked as the 2021 Top Hotel in Hailey by Tripadvisor.

Ryan Allison, owner of the Wood River Inn & Suites, shares his insights on the hospitality industry and the secret to attracting repeat customers.

What do you want people to know about your small business?

We’ve earned customer loyalty because of our competitive pricing and commitment to sustainability.

One of our top priorities is demonstrating environmental leadership. Our site hosts the largest commercial solar panel project in our valley, which generates a significant amount of power. Our hot breakfasts are compostable, and our water pumps in each hotel room save an estimated 18,000 plastic bottles that would otherwise go into the landfill each year.

Recently, we installed electric vehicle charging stations to accommodate growing demand. There are few electric stations in town and hosting our own charging station is a major benefit for visitors.

Many hospitality businesses have experienced an uneven economic recovery. How have you adapted to shifting consumer behavior?

The Wood River Inn & Suites offers the “Pet-a-Porter” service for your guests. Could you describe the service and how it provides value to your customers?

Because there are over 200 million pet owners in the U.S., we wanted to make it easier for guests to include their furry friends on adventures. Our entire ground level features pet-friendly rooms with dog beds, water bowls and treats.

We’re the only hotel in town that provides these popular amenities. Because Sun Valley is home to one of the top veterinarians in the country, our pet friendly rooms are frequently booked throughout the year.

What tips do you have for other small businesses seeking to grow?

I’ve learned it’s important to channel your passions into your business. Because I’m passionate about providing a positive customer experience, it’s easier to develop new ideas for the Wood River Inn & Suites.  

I also recommend working with seasoned professionals who can help you adapt to change and market conditions. I’ve experienced many market shifts over the last two decades and it’s valuable to have a trusted sounding board to discuss strategies for growth.
